MLA/AAHSL Legislative Task Force Make Capitol Hill Visits

March 29, 2011- Members of the Joint MLA/Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) Legislative Task Force met with congressional staff providing support to members of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. The task force addressed the importance of level funding for the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 and recommended a 12.9% increase for NLM in fiscal year 2012. The task force addressed programs and services that highlight why NLM is an investment in good health including:

  • NLM’s top 6 resources based on usage by the public, care providers, and researchers;
  • NLM’s role in advancing ongoing efforts to spur adoption and meaningful use of health information technology;
  • NLM’s leadership role in global disaster preparedness and response support; and
  • the work of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine supporting NLM’s outreach efforts at the local and regional levels.

Coalition for Health Funding

The statement addresses the principle that a healthy nation is a prosperous nation and a great return on investment.
