On Tuesday November 20, 2007 over twenty of MLA-Phil colleagues viewed the latest MLA Webcast on scholarly publishing and open access at Thomas Jefferson University’s Herbut Auditorium. The Education Committee coordinated and hosted the event with the help of several other MLA-Phil members.
One of the resources discussed was a Toolbox Card about Open Access available to MLA members at www.mlanet.org (Professional Resource link then Advocacy Toolbox). One correction needs to be noted on Card 18: The PDF link to the ARL publication “Framing the Issue…” is now http://www.arl.org/bm~doc/framing_issue_may04.pdf.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the webcast on scholarly publishing last week!
They mentioned the date for the next one: Wednesday, March 5, 2008. The topic is TBA.
Our MLA neighbors in New Jersey are sponsoring a CE course on “Finding the Evidence: Evidence-based Practice in Nursing”
While finding evidence in the medical literature has become fairly standardized, finding the evidence in the nursing literature can be less straightforward. This class will include a basic overview and history of EBP in nursing, hierarchies of quantitative and qualitative evidence, formulating the question and finding the right resources, as well as covering aspects unique to nursing, such as qualitative meta-synthesis and EBP in nursing administration.

Our friends at Philadelphia SLA will hold their 3rd TechTopics workshop on making the most of the Firefox browser. If the first two–on the 2.0 Office and Second Life–are any indication, this will be an excellent session. The workshop will be held in-person and via webcast.
The hands-on session will introduce student and professional librarians to Firefox and add-on’s in a computer lab setting. Included are automation add-on’s such as iMacros, Wikipedia Toolbar, Google Toolbar & LibX and organizational toolbars such as Del.icio.us & Zotero. Come find out how to use add-on’s to customize your browsing experience, automate tasks and get the most out the web. Session requires pre-registration and the pre-work of exporting your browser bookmarks to a file to work with in class. Christopher Curry is the Digital Archives Technician for the Drexel University Archives and Special Collections, and is close to completing his MS in Library Science at Drexel’s iSchool.
MLA members are eligible for the member rate. Registration deadline is Friday, November 9. Details at: http://units.sla.org/chapter/cphl/index.htm
