As part of our unofficial ‘Spring into Data!’ series of Spring events, the Philadelphia Regional Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MLA-Phil) is pleased to offer:
Translational Bioinformatics
Note: this workshop was offered previously outside the MLA-Phil region under the title of “Clinical Informatics”. It is not the same workshop as “Foundations of Bioinformatics and Searching,” which Diane Rein taught during her previous visit to Philadelphia in November, 2010.
The major goals of this course are:
- To familiarize participants with clinical bioinformatics databases
- To learn expert level search strategies within these databases
- To leave with a basic understanding of human genetics principles and vocabulary.
The session will cover clinical bioinformatics and its relationship to translational medicine, biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, and electronic medical and health records.
There will also be a module covering the biology and vocabulary in genetics, genomic variation and mutations and how to implement that vocabulary through searching several major clinical bioinformatics databases (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) which integrates biological data with human disease data and information, Human Genome Epidemiology Navigator (HuGE) and PharmGKB, the NIH-designated personalized medicine database which interrelates biological data with pharmacological and other pharmaceutical-related drug information.)
The workshop ends with an overview and demonstration of clinical bioinformatics public health databases.
Date: Friday, April 27, 2012
Time: 8:00 am to 5:30 pm
Location: Drexel Hahnemann Library, Drexel University Health Sciences Libraries, 245 North 15th Street, 1st floor computer lab and conference room
Instructor: Diane Rein, PhD, MLS, Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology Information Resources Librarian, University at Buffalo
Fee: $15/day for MLA/SLA/MAR Members, $30 for non-Members and $10 for library students and librarians in-between jobs. This course is intended for professional librarians, others may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
Online registration is now closed. Please contact Jenny Pierce to register; see contact information on our Board Members page.
The project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. HHS-N-276-2011-00003-C with the University of Pittsburgh, Health Sciences Library System

Good Afternoon:
Are you aware that The Center for Biomedical Informatics is hosting its 5th Annual Healthcare Informatics Symposium at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on the same day?
How do I register for this class…I am traveling from Richmond, VA.
To register for the event, you can go to the Translational Bioinformatics post at http://www.mlaphil.org/wp/ce/2012/03/08/translational-bioinformatics/
Here you can click on the “Acteva Register Now” button or click on the “Register online for event” link.
Cheryl, no, we (the event planners) weren’t aware that the symposium was occurring at CHOP on the same date — I’m sorry for the conflict (but hopefully people will be able to do both, if they wish)!
Thank you for letting us know,
-Lydia
You are most welcome…Will you be offering MLA CE credits for attending this session?
Yes, MLA CE credits will be offered with attendance.
How many MLA CE credits?
Eight MLA CE credits are being offered for the all day event.
