Strategic Plan: 2004-2006

Philadelphia Regional Chapter/MLA

The Philadelphia Regional Chapter of the MLA’s Strategic plan is established as an operational guide to complement the Strategic Plan of the National Medical Library Association. The plan is designed to meet the needs and concerns of the regional membership and is developed with input from the membership at large and the Board of Directors.

Mission: To support and promote librarianship as a vital aspect of health care both regionally and nationally.

Goals:

I. Promote discussion of current issues and professional needs in Health Science Libraries.

A. Support the role of librarians in health care.

B. Assist in the provision of unrestricted access to information.

C. Promote and assist in the sharing of resources.

D. Support the application of best practice standards.

E. Develop actions and programs that will increase the visibility of chapter librarians as vital components of successful health care.

II. Advocate on behalf of the membership through the following activities.

A. Communicate the needs and requests of Chapter members to the Medical Library Association.

B. Recognize or seek recognition for members who make significant contributions to the profession.

C. Develop and maintain liaisons with other regional health care associations, library associations and agencies, health care agencies and any information system organization that may benefit librarianship in health care.

III. Support the membership in utilizing current and developing technologies in information delivery.

A. Offer technology related programs to membership on information access and system development.

B. Provide avenues to keep members aware of technologic trends and possible future directions.

C. Support research as an essential role in health science librarianship.

D. Provide opportunities by which members can share proven methods and skills in the area of research based information management and delivery.

E. Consider initiating a Chapter research project that will contribute to improving librarianship.

IV. Continue to provide opportunities for the professional development of members.

A. Support members in the acquisition of recognized credentials.

B. Advocate the development of leadership skills in the membership.

C. Develop programs that will further the membership’s skills in benchmarking and statistics.

D. Provide educational opportunities in evidence-based health care.
