From the Chair

Thanks to everyone who has joined/renewed for 2012 and to Barbara Kuchan, Membership Chair, for conducting a successful registration drive. If you haven’t yet, please join.

Chapter events for 2012 kicked off last month with a visit to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, continuing the medical humanities theme that we explored last year on a  guided tour of the Anatomy/Academy exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Members were treated to a screening of Through the Weeping Glass, a piece by internationally renowned filmmakers Stephen and Timothy Quay, commissioned by the College of Physicians, featuring items from their historical library and the Mutter Museum.

Next up,  Chapter events will continue with a focus on emerging roles for information professionals. Mark your calendar for Friday, March 16, when we’ll hear from two experts on Data Curation.

Jenny Pierce, our new CE Chair, and her team are hard at work planning to bring Diane Reine back to teach translational informatics in April. Those who attended her sold-out session on bioinformatics during her last visit to Philadelphia can attest to the quality and depth of her teaching and will benefit from this newly developed content. On April 18, we expect to host a site viewing of the next webcast from MLA National.

As always, our Chapter’s main event will be the Annual Dinner, to be held in April. Lydia Witman, our Program Chair, and her team are scouting sumptuous locations and fascinating speakers.

On October 13-16, we’ll be meeting in Baltimore with our “neighbors” from the New York-New Jersey, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern Chapters for Connections, an MLA Quad Chapter Meeting. Priscilla Stephenson is leading our Chapter’s involvement.

Our small Chapter is an active driver of professional development, networking, and education for health sciences librarians and information professionals. This is all possible because of the volunteer efforts of the many dedicated volunteers serving on your Board and committees. Behind the scenes, this year we’ve been experimenting with Adobe Connect to make participation as efficient as possible, regardless of where in the region our volunteers are based. With the recent retirement of our esteemed colleague, Lenore Hardy, I’m recruiting for a Bylaws Chair. Drop me a line if you’re interested.

It’s my honor to serve you this year. I’ve had the opportunity to hear from many of you and learn more about the great work you’re doing to define the future of our profession.  Start thinking about which of  your worthy colleagues you’ll nominate (that includes self nominations!) for this year’s chapter awards.

Gary Kaplan
Chair, MLA-Phil
2011-2012
