Thank you for sharing this, Julia! As an animal lover, I'm often dismayed by the use of animals in research. One of my best friends in college was a biology major and created animal-free credit-earning lab projects, so she and subsequent animal-loving biologists could earn the credit without working on animals. I am glad to see the NIH helping these chimps. There are some heartbreaking videos available online, e.g. of research beagles who've been rescued and are taking their first steps on outside on grass. Some day I hope technology/simulation can completely replace the use of animals!

I just came across this information about a radiation-polluted lake in Russia, and the section below reminded me of the recent "gag order" news in Pennsylvania, related to fracking.

"Due to the fact that attending doctors were not allowed by the military to mention ‘chronic radiation sickness’ in their diagnoses for fear it would reveal the nature of the facility, patients were simply told they had ‘astheno-vegetative syndrome’ and medical records simply recorded vague terms such as ‘special disease’. 66 people would ultimately succumb to the sickness, plus another 49 to 55 to radiation-induced cancer."

See information about the Russian lake at the following "Basement Geographer" post, which provides a reference list at the bottom: http://basementgeographer.blogspot.com/2012/10/lake-karachay-mayak-and-chelyabinsk-40.html .
