PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Associate University Librarian for Information and Clinical Support Services, has responsibility for overall management of Information Services delivered to the Thomas Jefferson University community of users. Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian builds dynamic, collaborative relationships with Jefferson clinicians by providing a variety of specialized information services and individual consultations and by participating as a member of research- and information management-related project teams. As a member of the Library management team, he/she will evaluate existing services, plan and develop new services, and coordinate Information and Clinical Support Services delivery with other AISR public service units.

CORE FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Responsible for overall management and coordination of all Information Services activities, including supervision of all staff in the Department and services provided by the Department.
  • Cultivate relationships with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) clinicians and, in particular, nursing administration, nursing managers and nursing staff to identify opportunities for AISR partnerships in information literacy, information management and education. Provide consulting services that require a high level of knowledge on the effective use of information resources, search engines and information management software.
  • Attend clinical rounds, nursing division research committees, leadership and management meetings, journal clubs, seminars, case-conferences and other appropriate clinical forums, contributing expertise in advanced information and knowledge management practices. Research, analyze and deliver recommendations and reports in support of group objectives.
  • Form formal collaborations with department members, especially clinical nurse specialists, on grant-funded research projects, information-management projects, systematic literature review projects and other informatics projects.
  • Collaborate with appropriate AISR staff, senior hospital administrators and researchers to develop strategies and tools in support of the Hospital’s patient care mission. Explore, trial and recommend databases, datasets and informatics programs to manage, store and ensure access to clinical research information.
  • Evaluate needs for scheduled office hours within specific clinical areas in either a shared or designated physical space to establish an information expert presence.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the University.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Responsible for library staff training in the effective use of knowledge-based resources.
  • Teach library, information literacy or other specialized classes in cooperation with the Education department. Participate in conducting new student and human resources orientation sessions.
  • Investigate new technologies and works with others (Director of Digital Initiatives, Jeffline Editor, Discovery workgroup, JeffIT) to rethink and update software and bibliographic tools to respond to the changing information-seeking needs of Jefferson users.
  • Maintain high level of awareness of knowledge-based electronic resources in order to make recommendations for purchase, lease or linking on JEFFLINE. Play leadership role in development and organization of knowledge-based information resources on JEFFLINE. Serve on implementation teams established for adding knowledge-based resources to JEFFLINE. Direct or coordinate creation and maintenance of user guides by information services staff.
  • Plan and assign staffing for the Information Desk. Develop core knowledge requirements and appropriate training mechanisms for professional and technical staff. Evaluate performance of all Information Desk workers. Provide leadership in the performance of Information Desk service, including some evening and weekend hours.
  • Negotiate desk service hours for librarians from other departments, ensuring that the desk is appropriately staffed at all times.
  • Supervise fee-based consulting and searching services of the Information Services Department.
  • Collect and analyze data on the use of information services for evaluation and planning purposes.
  • Help formulate and meet goals and objectives for the Information Services Department, Scott Memorial Library and the Academic Information Services and Research division.
  • Participate in a variety of professional activities, such as active participation in professional organizations and publishing.
  • Perform other related duties as required

SALARY RANGE:
