MLA National held a webcast last Friday on “Connecting E-science and Team Science: The Changing Nature of Research“. Thanks to Martha Kirby and her staff, the Philadelphia Regional Chapter sponsored a viewing hosted by Adrienne Jensen at Drexel College of Medicine Queen Lane Campus. We had a smaller turnout than usual. Nikki Detmar points out on her eagledawg blog, that the Friday afternoon timing may have been a factor. If you weren’t able to make it, please let us know so we can plan accordingly for the spring webcast.

Here are some of the resources mentioned that I’ve found helpful: the Sigma Xi white paper, Team Science: Heaving Walls & Melding Silos (pdf) provides a good overview of this emerging trend in how science approaches society’s intractable problems such as climate change or healthcare delivery, teamscience.net provides an interactive learning module, and the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) maintains a list of funding mechanisms.

Dear Colleagues,

Please join us at the MAR-LI “Present with Confidence” program sponsored by the NNLM-MAR Leadership Institute.

Present with Confidence: Tips & Tricks for Spontaneous and High Impact Speeches
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
8:30 a.m – 5:00 p.m.
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

Leaders have the ability to effectively engage their audience, communicate succinctly and confidently, and take advantage of spontaneous moments to promote themselves, as well as their organization. This free workshop, sponsored by the NNLM-MAR Leadership Institute, is designed to teach presentation skills for public speaking, as well as prepare you to think, and speak, spontaneously.

The day will begin with a dynamic session that will enable participants to design and deliver effective presentations. Attendees will learn how to reduce anxiety around public speaking as well as the ability to design and deliver a presentation that gets critical points across effectively. Key outcomes will include the appropriate use of technology, written materials, and humor. In addition, participants will learn how to assess audience engagement, comprehension, and deal with even the most challenging crowd!

A lunch time panel of technology experts will discuss and demonstrate current and emerging technologies that can be used effectively in communication and presentations.

The afternoon session will prepare participants to give the elevator speech of your life. How many times have you found yourself standing next to the right person without the right words, with no words, or with a sudden intense interest in the progress of your elevator ride? This session will prepare you to become more spontaneous in such situations.

Presenters:

Diane Banks has more than twenty years of experience in training and organizational development in both internal and external positions. She is a frequently-requested speaker for state and national organizations and a contributor of articles to national journals. Diane is currently serving as the Vice President of Performance Improvement for West Shore Medical Center in Manistee, Michigan.

Michael Schaefer is a professional narrator whose clients include Xerox, Canon, CMP Publications and Edgix. To market Citibank’s online banking he developed his own interactive multimedia presentation. He has also worked on marketing tours and product launches for Nissan, Hasbro, and appeared in filmed industrials for clients like American Express. For the I.T.
