			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Philadelphia Chapter of the Special Libraries Association will begin its 2010 Programs Series on March 9th, 2010.</p>
<p><strong>What: </strong>What does the future hold for Scientific &amp; Technical Publishing?</p>
<p><span id="more-2640"></span>In the dynamically changing world of Scientific, Technical and Medical publishing, what forces are at work and what tools do scientists need to keep up with and manage archives of research in their fields?</p>
<p>This will be an interactive session in which the presenter poses questions to SLA members and shares her knowledge of trends in journal and database publishing.  Trends include Web 2.0, Workflow tools, Collaboration tools, and the impact of the Open Access movement on commercial and scientific society publishing.</p>
<p><strong>Who:</strong> Jean Fisher, Vantage Information Services</p>
<p>With a Master’s in Library Science from Rutgers University, Jean began her career in a variety of public, academic and corporate libraries.  Moving into a sales position at LexisNexis, she learned the competitive challenges faced by commercial information vendors.  Her work at LexisNexis spanned 16 years and included product development, marketing, and training.  Jean has also worked for US Interactive, a web development firm; Sageware, a Silicon Valley taxonomy developer; GfK Market Measures, a pharmaceutical market research firm; and QVC, the West Chester-based TV and internet shopping network.</p>
<p>Jean now is the Principal of Vantage Information Services, a provider of taxonomy services, market research and competitive intelligence for the publishing community.  Her clients have included IEEE and CTB International.  She is a member of the Special Libraries Association and the American Society for Information Science and Technology.</p>
<p><strong>When:</strong> Tuesday, March 9, 2010 &#8212; 5:30 to 7:30 pm &#8212; dinner will be provided</p>

<p><strong>Library Mashups: Exploring New Ways to Deliver Library Data</strong><br />
In the first half of this workshop, attendees will learn about some of the tools they can use to mash up library data with content from the web to reach more patrons.  Examples include using maps to enhance library data, using Flickr for digital collections and creating library websites with data from several information sources.</p>
<p>After learning the basics and seeing examples from other libraries around the world, attendees will have a chance to create a website with WordPress pulling data from several sources on the web.</p>
<p>After attending this talk, librarians will be able to:<br />
• Define what a mashup is and identify mashups on library sites and the web.<br />
• Find tools and APIs to gather data for their own library sites<br />
• Pull data from other sites into a WordPress website</p>
<p><strong>Who:</strong> Nicole C. Engard, editor of &#8220;Library Mashups: Exploring new ways to deliver library data&#8221; (http://mashups.web2learning.net), will explain what mashups are, how they can be used and share examples from libraries around the world.</p>
